Discovering PADI Scuba Diving in Kerala

Inspired by ZNMD and a lifelong love for the ocean, this blog shares my experience getting PADI certified in Kerala with Bond Safari Kovalam — from pool drills to swimming with vibrant marine life. A must-read for first-time divers and adventure seekers!

🌊 Discovering PADI Scuba Diving in Kerala

Inspired by the ocean adventure in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, I’ve always dreamt of exploring marine life up close. My love of water traces back to age 3, when swimming became part of a medical routine—and it later fueled my underwater curiosity.

🧭 Finding a Course Near You

A quick Google search for “Scuba diving courses near me” led me to Bond Safari Kovalam, a reputable PADI dive center in Kerala. Though I didn't meet a dive partner like Laila from the movie, my instructor (close to my age) made the certification process smooth and memorable.

🤿 What You’ll need to pass:

Here are the key skills you'll need to master before you get certified in a PADI scuba course:

Swimming: 200 m without gear, 300 m with snorkel & fins

Treading Water: Stay afloat for 2 minutes

PADI Exercises: Practical skills from the manual (Detailed below)

📚 Day 1 – Dive Theory & Safety

You’ll study essential scuba theory: underwater etiquette, slow ascents, and decompression stops. It’s critical to understand that ascending too fast can cause serious harm—even if you’re a confident swimmer.

🌅 Day 2 – Pool Session & Quarry Training

By evening, key open-water skills are introduced:

  • Proper gear fitting

  • Underwater communication signals

  • Buoyancy control using breath

  • Clearing water from your mask

  • Kit removal/replacement underwater

  • Sharing air with a buddy

  • Controlled ascent rates (max 9 m/min to 6 m, then 3 m/min to surface)

  • Compass and dive-computer use

🌊 Open-Water Dives

After passing your skills test, you're ready for open-water dives. Floating among tropical fish—like neon-colored reef dwellers and curious pufferfish—and seeing coral reefs is nothing short of magical. The training also covers marine conservation and fish safety.

⚠️ Crucial Safety Tip

Never hold your breath underwater. With changing pressure, holding air can cause lung injury. Trust your compressed-air tank and breathe continuously.
